Press Release: Minardi Signs Irish Racing Driver
The Minardi Formula One racing team has signed Dublin-born racing driver Greg Murphy, to drive for their junior team in the Asian Formula Three Championship. Murphy was signed by Minardi following a competitive international shoot-out held in the Phillipines in March. Murphy will now represent Ireland and Team Minardi, for the first time at the Asian Formula 3 Championship which begins next week in the Philippines. (April 9, 2005)
“I have always had my sights set on Formula One so the opportunity to become part of the 2005 / 2006 Minardi team is a huge achievement for me. It’s a dream come true.” said 25year old Murphy.
On signing Murphy, Minardi Team Boss Mark Goddard said “Formula Three is the world’s premier testing ground for the Formula One stars of the future. The Minardi F1 team will be keeping a close eye on Greg’s performance. He is a huge prospect. The best talent to come out of Ireland since Eddie Irvine.” He continued: “…The Minardi team has won the Promotion Class in the past two years and we are counting on our new Irish driver to make it a hat trick!”
Formula Three consists of single-seater cars with a two-litre engine, which are capable of speeds of over 300 kmh (180 mph). The Asian championship attracts many of the finest up and coming drivers from around the world.
Murphy has managed to capture a professional drive without the support of a personal or corporate financial sponsor. “Irish drivers are often disadvantaged in motorsport, as the level of sponsorship required to reach the higher levels of the sport is often beyond our reach. To secure a drive with one of the world’s top motorsport teams, on merit alone, is a huge achievement for me.” With his sights clearly set on Formula One, Murphy promises to be a huge prospect on the International racing map.
