Greg Secures Second Place in the Asian F3 Championship

Earlier today, Greg Murphy secured second place in the Asian Formula Three Promotions championship at the Batangas circuit in the Phillipines as this year's series came to an end with back-to-back races.

Speaking from Manila earlier today Greg said he was delighted with the season: "It's been a fantastic season for me, obviously you'd love to win the champiosnhip and that was my objective at the start of the season, but I am ecstatic with the result. I've been learning new circuits, battling with difficult weather conditions and racing against some great competitors, so to come away with second in the championship is a brilliant result and hopefully will be the start of the next phase of my driving career."

Murphy continued: "I want to pay special thanks to Mark Goddard and everyone at Minardi Team Asia for their fantastic support throughout the season, they have played a fantastic part in this success. I'd also like to heartily congratulate Moreno Soeprapto who won the championship, I enjoyed our tussle throughout the season. There's no doubt that Asian Formula Three is going from strength to strength and the growing representation from Ireland is fantastic for motorsport in Asia and back home."

Greg is planning to return to Ireland later this week, after a number of ceremonies in the Phillipines are completed.

Congratulations Greg!

Murphy second in championship after difficult weekend in China

Greg Murphy currently lies in second place in the Asian Formula Three Promotions Championship following the fifth and sixth rounds which took place this weekend at the Zhuhai track in China.

Murphy, who finished in second place in the fifth round yesterday, was shunted off the track by championship rival Moreno Soeprapto during the sixth round earlier today.

Starting in second place on the grid, Murphy made a great start and was leading the race until the closing stages when his Dallara was hit from behind by Soeprapto sending him spinning off the track and causing a lot of damage to his car. Greg was unable to re-join the race allowing Soeprapto an easy win.

The result puts Soeprapto in the lead of the championship by three points from Greg heading into the next rounds which take place in Indonesia in August.

Greg was philosophical about the accident:
"Obviously I'm terribly disapointed. I was leading the race, I felt like everything was under control. I was very happy with the car and it was a pity that the accident happened. Unfortunately it's part and parcel of motorsport, accidents happen and you've got to put up with it and move on to the next race. The most important thing is that I'm still right in there with a great chance of winning the championship after six rounds. We're off to Moreno's home track next which will make it a tough challenge, but I'm confident that barring any more off track antics I can do well out there."

Greg arrives back in Dublin tomorrow and will begin preparations for Indonesia.

Update: June 20, 2005

Following the incident where Moreno Soeprapto pushed Greg Murphy into the wall and retirement, the race stewards have decided the incident was avoidable and Soeprapto has been fined $500 and had two thirds of his points deducted.

Greg Murphy Leads Asian F3 Promotions Championship after races in China

Greg is now leading the Asian Formula Three Promotions Championship after the third and fourth round races which took place at the Zhuhai circuit in China this weekend.

As we posted yesterday, Greg won the third round of the series on Saturday and he finished in second place in the fourth round on Sunday morning Irish time. He now leads the championship by seven points from Indonesia’s Moreno Soeprapto.

The next round of the Asian F3 Championship takes place on June 18th 2005 back in China.

Greg gets back in Dublin tomorrow. Speaking from a bar in Hong Kong watching the Spanish Grand Prix, Greg said he was delighted with how the weekend went:

“It’s fantastic to be leading the championship at this point. I was really thrilled to register my first Formula Three win on Saturday but it was just as important to follow that up with a strong performance on Sunday. The second race was difficult with a major incident at the start so to get second place was a great result. It's nice to be leading the championship but it's still the early stages of the season so there's a lot of points to be won and lost yet."

We'll be posting photos of the action from China on this site in the coming days.

Greg Wins the Third Round of the Asian F3 Promotions Championship!

Greg Murphy won the third round of the Asian Formula Three Promotions Championship at the Zhuhai circuit in China earlier this morning. Murphy, who qualified his Minardi Team Asia car in third place, made a great start and took the lead on the opening lap, a lead he never relinquished. The win puts him into the lead of the Asian Formula Three Promotions Championship, ahead of the fourth round which takes place in China on Sunday morning Irish time.

Greg was thrilled with the result:
“My first Formula Three race win is a memory that I’ll always cherish. We had some problems in qualifying which left me in third place, but thanks to a good start I was able to sneak into the lead on the first lap. Leading from the start can always add a bit of additional pressure, but I was lucky enough to keep it all under control. I’m thrilled with the result but I’m here to win this championship and tomorrow is a completely new challenge. Right now I’m putting my focus on getting a good result in that race to keep my championship hopes on track.”

Murphy will qualify for the fourth round of the championship on Sunday morning with the race taking place at 13.35 local time (6.35am Irish time).
